Origin & Evolution

Most people who know about American history would say that Pineville’s claim to fame is former President James K Polk. The little suburban town is the birthplace of the United States’ eleventh president from 1845 – 1849.

At the time, Pineville was known as a mule trading center. The area had meadows fields, where traders could take their animals to graze; hence it was called Murrow’s Turn out.

By 1852, the town became a railroad town. The Charlotte & Columbia Railroad was the first of many steps to modern development and renaming. The railroad managers did not like the community name because it did not reflect the major industry (transport) and natural resources (Pine trees). So they decided to name the area, Pineville – paying homage to the large Pine trees found in the area. The name Pineville was incorporated in 1873.

In the 1880s and 1890s, Pineville transformed into an agricultural and cultural center. The establishment of the Dover Yarn Mill, which employed over 200 people, marked the agricultural transformation. However, the economic steam of the agricultural and cultural evolution slowed after the Great Depression of the 1930s.

It would take another 60 years for Pineville to experience another transformation thanks to suburbanization, the building of the interstate, and the widespread establishment of retail businesses.

Today, Pineville is a suburban town with several malls, hospitals, restaurants, hotels, dental practices, and entertainment centers.
